The Archetypal Myth of
Demeter & Persephone: A Story for Mother & Daughter Celebrations
New book release from Marjorie Meyers Graham
The 48-page illustrated soft cover
The Archetypal Myth of
Demeter & Persephone: A Story for Mother & Daughter Celebrations
is first in a series of six books designed for junior high and above
readers that present ancient Greek mythology in a new light.
This pre-historic version of Demeter & Persephone is
significantly different from the usual Classical Greek story
which is taught in school, pushing it back at least 1,000 years.
The myth is designed to be read aloud in celebration of the
beginning of spring. Insights into goddess mythology,
psychology and ancient Minoan culture are also presented
throughout the book, which features my original artwork. This
book is suitable for English, social studies and drama classes.
I began the series of books with the story of the seasons, which
relates to the special love between mothers and daughters.
Retail price $11.95 plus 7.75% sales tax (in Illinois) plus $4.00 shipping.
"A beautifully illustrated and delightful retelling of the Demeter
and Persephone story, in a dramatic, shareable form that will be
enjoyed whenever women come together in ritual.
Graham, with her wonderful Monoan-inspired artwork, has breathed new
life into the ageless myth of the mysteries and magic between mothers
and daughters, as valid today as it was four thousand years ago."
– deTraci Regula, author of
The Mysteries of Isis
"Simply and honestly told as myths should be, the tale of Demeter and
Persephone unfolds through dramatic voices — storyteller, the
mother goddess and her daughter — with exquisite illustrations
and background text. The reader is invited to imagine movement,
gesture, expression within the layered tensions of love, choice,
loss, and celebration. We hear characters' voices and a world of sound.
Read aloud and delight!"
– Jacqueline Murphy, former director of
Arts at the Center of Teaching and Learning, Chicago Teachers' Center,
Northeastern Illinois University.
"Wonderful, inventive new approach … the reader can become truly
involved in the myth."
– Colleen Luxem, Youth Mythology Department,
The Book Stall, Winnetka, IL.
